Reiki Levels: How to do a Reiki Attunement?

Reiki is divided into three main levels (and in some systems a fourth level) in terms of learning and practice. Each level enables one to establish a deeper connection with Reiki energy and to use the energy more consciously. Reiki attunement is the process by which a Reiki master opens the student’s energy centers and attunes them to Reiki energy. This process permanently imparts the ability to channel energy.

Reiki Levels

Level 1 (Reiki I): Physical Healing Level

  • The basics of Reiki and hand positions are taught.
  • Energy is transferred through the hands and the physical body is worked on.
  • At this level, Reiki energy is usually applied to oneself and one’s immediate environment.
  • Reiki I attunement gives the ability to feel and direct energy.

Level 2 (Reiki II): Mental and Emotional Healing Level

  • Reiki symbols (for example, Cho Ku Rei, Sei He Ki, Hon Sha Ze Sho Nen) are introduced and their use is taught.
  • At this level, the ability to do distance healing is acquired.
  • The ability to channel energy to clear mental and emotional blockages is developed.
  • The ability to work with symbols during attunement is gained.

Level 3 (Reiki III): Master Level

  • The Reiki Master symbol is taught and the ability to work with this energy is gained.
  • At this level, the person learns to practice Reiki with a higher consciousness and gains the authority to give Reiki attunements to others.
  • The focus is usually on spiritual development and conscious healing.

Level 4 (Optional): Grand Master Level

  • In some systems this level is called “Reiki Master Teacher”.
  • As a Reiki teacher, the person can train and attune others.

How is a Reiki attunement done?

Reiki attunement is a spiritual process performed by a Reiki master. During this process, energy centers (chakras) are opened and connected to Reiki energy. The harmonization process usually involves the following steps:

1. Preparation Process

  1. Spiritual Preparation:
    • The Reiki master starts the process by meditating and setting intentions.
    • The student must also be mentally ready for the attunement.
  2. Physical Environment:
    • A quiet, peaceful and energetic environment is chosen.
    • Candles, incense and light music are used to make the environment relaxing.

2. Harmonization Process

  1. Making Energy Connections:
    • The Reiki master connects with the universal life energy.
    • During the attunement, he directs the flow of energy by placing his hands on the student’s chakras.
  2. Transferring Reiki Symbols:
    • The master mentally uses certain Reiki symbols and transfers these symbols into the student’s energy field.
    • For example, the symbol for power (Cho Ku Rei) opens the energy channel.
  3. Opening the Energy Field:
    • The Reiki master opens the student’s energy channels and allows Reiki energy to flow.
    • Each chakra is worked on and energy blockages are cleared.
  4. Setting Intention:
    • During the attunement, a connection is established on a subconscious level for the student to use Reiki energy with the right intention.

3. After the attunement

  • Purification Process:
    • After the attunement, the person usually undergoes a 21-day purification process. During this time, energy channels are cleared and the connection with Reiki energy is strengthened.
    • Drinking plenty of water, meditating and practicing the energy regularly supports this process.
  • Application and Practice:
    • The student learns to feel and direct energy by practicing Reiki on themselves or others.

Importance of Reiki Attunement

Reiki attunement gives you the ability to direct energy in a conscious way. Through this process:

  • Energy channels are opened.
  • Universal life energy is accessed.
  • Reiki practices become more effective.

Reiki attunement contributes to one’s spiritual development and enables a deep connection with life energy. Therefore, the attunement should only be received from a competent Reiki master.
